Nepal has expanded a digital system that tracks the movements and stays of foreign nationals nationwide, a move authorities say will improve tourist safety, strengthen immigration oversight and help prevent crime.

The system, initially introduced in hotels, travel agencies, money exchanges and other service providers in the Kathmandu Valley on January 1, 2025, now covers the entire country, DoI Director Shiva Lamsal said at an orientation programme in Nagarkot, Bhaktapur, on Monday.

The system enables authorities to track where foreign nationals stay and travel, verify compliance with visa conditions and help locate missing tourists during disasters.

Lamsal said 459 foreign nationals were deported in 2025 and another 540 between January 1 and October 10, 2026, for violating the law. Of them, 64 in 2025 and 61 by October 10, 2026, were sent back for immigration violations, including breaching visa conditions and engaging in illegal activities.

The department aims to strengthen tourist security, improve information sharing and curb potential criminal activities while supporting tourism, Lamsal said.

DoI Director Amardeep Sunuwar said hotels, domestic airlines, trekking and travel agencies, mountaineering operators, public transport providers, telecom companies, banks and financial institutions, tourist guides and tourist police can enter information directly into the system.
