Club in Dharan. When people imagine Nepal, they
think of Himalayan mountains, of exotic temples
and tranquil villages, of trekking, of rafting,
and of touring and shopping. The local
hospitality and friendliness prevailing on the
streets manifests in the courses. Golfing Nepal
is like being in an enchanted sanctuary, not a
golf course. But unknown to most of the world,
there are unpolished gems still relatively
untapped in this Shangri-La of Asia ? wonderful
golf courses to be played and experienced.
Currently Nepal is home to five public golf
courses: Gokarna Forest Golf Resort and Royal
Nepal Golf Course in Kathmandu, Himalayan Golf
Club and Fulbari Resort Golf Course in Pokhara
and Nirvana Country Club in Dharan. Each is
unique and enjoyable in separate ways. Royal
Nepal Golf Club, perched conjointly on the
sloping land alongside the airport strip at
Tilganga. Established in 1829 by the ruling
Ranas, the course was given royal status in 1911
and claims to be one of the oldest golf clubs in
Asia. Selected professionals and complete
practice facilities are at hand for those who
wish to follow that irresistible urge to
improve, or perhaps, just to make a start at
joining the golfing fraternity.
Short History about Golf in Nepal.
1917 Rana Prime Minister's delegation returns
from Scotland with some golf clubs. Started
playing at Gaucharan, where the present T.I.
Airport runway is located. G of those days were
Rana Generals like, Gen Babar Shumsher and Gen
Lava Shumsher. It is believed that they had 18
holes at that time, with sand and oil/tar based
greens (so called browns). Some golf tournaments
were initiated at that time.
Mid 1920's The Lava cup was started in mid
1920's
1955 The golf course at Gaucharan got shortened
once airplanes started landing in Kathmandu as
the runway occupied half of it's land. Those
days even King Tribhuwan and members of the
Royal family used to play golf occasionally.
Prince Basundhara was a keen golfer.
Late 50's Gen Kiran Shumsher established the
same golf course by naming it Gauchar Golf Club.
5/Sep/1965 Gauchar Golf Club received Royal
patronage from King Mahendra; the Club was
inaugurated, and since then it has been named
Royal Nepal Golf Club (RNGC). Prince Basundhara
became president and held presidency until 1978.
Golfers in those days were mostly expatriates,
diplomats and from the Shah and Rana families.
Late 60's Dharan Country Club was established by
British Gorkhas in Dharan. The course had 9
holes and grass greens (not browns).
1982 All the land of RNGC was occupied by Civil
Aviation to expand the Airport. There were no
golf courses in the Kathmandu valley for over a
year. The only golf course remaining in the
country was the Dharan Country Club.
1983 RNGC was revived in Tilganga on Pashupati
Development Trust land. It had only 6 par 3's
holes and golfers used to play it thrice to
complete the requisite 18 holes.
1984 Gokarna Safari Golf Club was established at
Rajnikunj Gokarna in Kathmandu. Nine holes with
browns (not greens) were made.
RNGC expands up to 9 holes – 8 par 3's and one
par 4.
Nepal Golf Association was established.
1986 RNGC gets land from Civil Aviation and
build 6 new holes and uses 3 old holes.
1988 First Bermuda greens were made at RNGC.
1993 First Professional/International tournament
was held in Nepal. The "Surya Nepal Open" at
RNGC commenced and was held yearly thereafter.
Crown Prince Dipendra gave his patronage to RNGC.
Gokarna Safari Golf Club ceased to exist.
1994 The stunning nine hole "Himalayan Golf
Course" was established in Pokhara.
1996 Work started on an international standard
18 hole Golf Course at Rajnikunj Gokarna
1997 Green Canyon Country Club – 9 hole par 3
course established at Fulbari Resort, Pokhara.
1998 Army Golf Course construction started
behind TI Airport, Kathmandu Nepal Professional
Golfers Association was Established. NPGA
currently has 18 professional golfer members.
1999 Gokarna Forest Golf Resort (GFGR) opened up
with Nepal's first international standard 18
hole golf course. The Surya Nepal Masters
professional tournament ups its prize money and
moves the event to GFGR.
2000 Army Golf Club – 9 holes established in
Kathmandu – known to the less fit as "The
Commando Course".
GFGR opens up its practice driving range in
August.
Bafal Driving range opens in December near the
Soaltee with lights for night practice,
facilities for video analysis, and a cafeteria.
2001 Dharan Golf Club leased out and revives as
Nirvana Country Club
Pokhara Golf School - driving range opens in
April – 230 yards in length.
2002 Fulbari Resort remodels and lengthens their
course and renames it Annapurna Golf Club.
GFGR starts expansion of Clubhouse and
recreational facilities to cater to growing
membership.
June 2002 Chaudhary Group opens a private 9 hole
golf course in their industrial area in
Nawalparasi, Narayanghat, Central Nepal.
Comprises 7 par 3s and 2 par 4s.
May 2003 First Nepal Amateur Open held at
Gokarna Forest Golf Resort & Spa

Golf Tour Itinerary.
Day 01:
Kathmandu – Le Meridien Hotel
Arrive in Kathmandu. On arrival you will be met
and transferred to Le Meridien Hotel. Set amidst
majestic forests and the stunning backdrop of
the Himalayan snow-capped peaks, Le Meridien
Kathmandu Gokarna Forest Golf Resort and Spa is
a striking complement to its vibrant
surroundings. Traditionally the private Royal
hunting grounds of the Kings of Nepal, the
temperate forests of medieval Kathmandu have
been preserved for over 500 years.
Day 2: Kathmandu – Le Meridien Hotel
Early morning golf at the Gorkana 18 hole
championship 72 par 18 hole layout in the a
classical setting of the forested national park.
Golfers will be amazed by the resort's
outstanding golf course. Set against the
backdrop of the snow capped Himalayas; the golf
course was designed by Gleneagles Golf
Developments and boasts the only Bent Grass
Greens in South Asia making it one of the
highlights of the professional circuits in the
region. Non golfers can relax, enjoy the Spa,
swimming pool and surrounds of the forest. A
leisurely walk can also be arranged. As well as
an optional afternoon visit to the spectacular
Bhoudanath Stupa. Afternoon at leisure.
Overnight at Le Meridien Hotel
Day 3: Kathmandu – Le Meridien Hotel
After a light breakfast transfer in the morning
to the 9 hole Royal Nepal Golf Club- the oldest
club in the country located near to the airport.
(note: Non golfers might consider doing an early
morning Mountain flight towards Everest). Lunch
at The Kaiser Restaurant in the Garden of Dreams
in Thamel followed by a walk through the old
streets of Kathmandu and sightseeing of Durbar
Square and Hanumandhoka. Return to Le Meridien
Hotel for dinner and overnight.
Day 4: Kathmandu – Pokhara – The Fulbari resort
& Spa
Early morning round at Gorkhana and after lunch
take the afternoon flight to Pokhara. On arrival
in Pokhara you will be met and transferred to
The Fulbari Resort and Spa.Relax and stay in
with dinner at the resort.
Day 5: Pokhara – Fulbari Resort and Spa.
Early morning round on the short but exciting
and demanding 9 hole “Yeti's” Golf course at the
resort. Some of the tee shots over the Seti
River gorge will never be forgotten!. The
Fulbari Resort & Spa is the only property in
Pokhara to have its own golf course, The Yeti’s
Golf Course. It is a 9 Hole Executive Golf
Course, designed to be Nepal’s most iconic and
unique course that challenges not only amateurs
but even pros. Overlooking the Seti River gorge,
players not only have to navigate the usual
water hazards and sand traps, but also the 300
ft. gorges that intersect some holes. One needs
1 hour and 30 minutes to finish the first round
of the holes. Sounds easy? But wait! It's quite
difficult because of the deliberate small
greens, narrow fairways and closed out-of bound
(O/B) fenced with surrounding water ponds.
Although only 9 holes the use of alternate tees,
greens, and pin positions, gives the feeling of
playing a full 18 hole layout. The location is
spectacular and a number of the tee shots across
the Seti Gorge will mentally challenge even the
very best golfer. But the area is tranquil, the
views of the Himalayas to the north, and the
Seti River far below, stunning, and by the 19th
hole you really will have earned your
refreshment. After returning from your round of
Golf relax at the hotel or head down to Lakeside
for lunch and take a boat trip across the Phewa
lake and then a hike up to the Japanese Peace
Pagoda stupa in the afternoon (note: a vehicle
may also be taken up to the Pagoda). Return to
the hotel and dinner at the Resort.
Day 6: Pokhara – Fulbari Resort and Spa –
Dwarikas Hotel, Kathmandu
Non golfers can take an early morning trip to
Sarangkot for spectacular mountain views and
possible options of hang gliding or an exciting
Micro flight. Golfers can head off to the
experience of a lifetime. To play the super
scenic Himalayan course. A camera is equally as
important as a set of golf clubs and lots of
spare balls.!!! After lunch take the afternoon
flight back to Kathmandu. Upon arrival you will
be met and transferred to award winning
Dwarika’s Hotel which is located 5 minutes from
the airport and 15 minutes from the tourist
district of Thamel. This Heritage style Hotel is
beautifully designed with traditional Nepalese
carvings and offers superb service and
accommodation. In the evening enjoy a farewell
dinner at their famous Krishnarpaan Restaurant.
Day 7: International Departure
Transferred to the airport for your
international departure
