SUNKOSHI
RIVER RAFTING.
The multi -day quest for gold 10 Days
The SUNKOSHI means River of Gold, so called after
the gold that is sometimes panned from the river
gravel or perhaps the silty orange color it gets in
monsoon. It is known by river runners as the BIG
ONE! It rises near Tibet and rushes eastward to form
the watershed of Eastern Nepal. In high water it is
not for the faint hearted. The river is wide and
fast with bumpy pressure waves fed by the monsoon
big hones and massive waves are the order of the day
and most rapids have only tow results - flip or trip
- but certainly won't get through without the river
letting you know who is Boss!
The Sunkoshi Thunders through isolated terrain
occasionally coming across Rai and Limbu villages.
This is unspoilt rural Nepal at its best. The banks
have broad, sandy beaches ideal for camping and the
river gives us little surprises such as the
occasional waterfall where you can play while the
water pummels your tired limbs. The banks of the
lower river heavily forested with troops of monkeys
and exotic birds.
ITINERARIES
Day:01
We meet at the drift's office in Thamel at 06:30
(though it's your vacation) and take a five minute
walk to our private bus to start our adventure. It
is a 3 hours journey to the 'put-in point' where we
have a 'smorgasbord' lunch of the finest, energy
giving food (nothing but the best for our gold
hunters). The guides will brief you on the safety
aspects of the trip and then we hit the mighty
SUNKOSHI! The afternoon is spent honing skills on
grade 2-3 rapids to warm up for the week ahead. In
the evening we make camp under the stars. Some hot
stimulationg drinks, a wholesome dinner prepared and
served by the guides and we bid goodnight to the
first day on our quest for gold.
Day:02-08
Wake up to the sound of the roaring river and a
choice of hot or cold breakfast. Today we bump and
tumble down rapids like the Meat Grinder and No
Exit. After a leisurely lunch we drift a bit and
raft a bit towarda our campsite. Lots of grade 2-3
and 3-4s rapids to let you practice, and believe you
me, you are going to need it once you hit the Mighty
Hakapur. Once at camp the guides again show off
their culinary expertise. On day 3 we step it up a
little with the Motorcycle and high Anxiety. The
Dudhkosi joins the SUNKOSHI and everything goes
haywire with lots of confluence. It goes on with
rapids like the Mighty Hakapur, Hakapur II, Jaws,
Dead Man's Eddy, Jungle Corridor, Big Hole, Rhino
Rock, Roller Coaster, Black Hole and the Big Dipper.
Please note that will be a lay over day on this
trip.
Day:09
Today you can sit back and reflect. LEt that
warm, tired but happy feeling wash over you. You
have survived the hunt for gold hunt when many would
not have dared to set foot on the path. Tomorrow it
will be a memory but savor the river, marvel at the
pristine forests and check your self that it is
real. Thought you may not have found some gold
nuggets but you certainly have a golden memory to
bring back home. After lunch say good-bye to the BIG
ONE and say thanks to the river gods as we set off
for KATHMANDU.
Day:10
Wake up in Kathmandu after an over night private bus
ride from Chatara where our take out was. On our way
back some of us might want to explore and have that
animal instinct to be in jungle for a safari
adventure in Royal Chitwan National Park. Please
remember that, there is an availability in option of
flying our and staying at the safari camp. You will
have to let us know before going on the trip so that
we can do the necessary arrangements for you.
